Laminae Futura is a bubble-like light sculpture, 10 feet in diameter and just under 7 feet tall, composed of intertwined horizontal strata. It is my first foray into using recycled translucent HDPE plastic. The milk, water and oil jugs used in this piece came from recycling bins at our small-town transfer station.
My interest in geological strata, and in deep-time-cycle processes led me to experiment with this layered composition showing artifacts of our time, onto which I could project a time based program of visuals. Rear-projected video imagery flows across its layered surfaces, combining abstract natural elements and patterns with subtle hints of urban and industrial landscapes.
Embedded cameras capture real-time images of viewers, transforming them into abstract, translucent outlines that drift through the visuals. The overall effect is meant to be dreamlike and suggestive, rather than instructive or narrative.
Laminae Futura showed in 2025 at the Portland Winter Light festival and at Meeting at the Balance in Seattle’s Freeway Park.
