This Velvet Light

Visitors move their hands near the globes and touch-free controllers trigger lights and sound. Shown at the Lumiere Festival in Vancouver, and the Portland Winter Light Festival.

Details

This Velvet Light is a colorful, energetic, interactive, audio-visual installation, made up of three abstract, Art Nouveau-inspired, tree-like structures. Warm bubbles of light and activity draws visitors in, and as they enter the scale of this landscape, they become active participants in a dynamic dance of light and sound, shaping their unique narrative through their presence and movements within the immersive environment.

Proximity detectors around each tree capture visitor presence and motion, triggering colorful video sequences and animations that dynamically respond to their movements, Hidden speakers play sounds, also tied to visitor activations.  At rest, the installation features an ambient soundscape and low-level visual pulses on translucent surfaces. Each tree rotates through different color palettes and visual looks, all crafted from waterproof papiér maché bubbles. This Velvet Light has been featured at the Lumiere Festival in Vancouver, BC (2023) and the Portland Winter Light Festival in Portland, OR (2024).
