Embarkation

Originally a performance piece, this short video is of a poem by Seattle poet Shin Yu Pai. We used a combination of captured images from a burning boat ceremony in Taiwan, and new, found, and stock imagery.

Details

This piece was originally staged as an audio/visual piece as part of ‘Ampersand at the Moore’ in Seattle in November of 2019.  In that version, Shin Yu Pai performed the poem live on stage, wearing a custom, complex white dress.  She was accompanied by live musicians.  The bulk of the video was projected onto an overhead screen, and, at a certain point in the poem, imagery was projected directly onto her and her dress

We later combined a professional recording of the poem with the imagery to create a video for Northwest Film Forum’s Cadence Video Poetry Festival.  The video was also accepted into the  Zebra Poetry Film Festival in Berlin in 2020, and was screened during the pandemic.

In 2021 the video was featured as part of the‘Paths Intertwined’ Exhibit at Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience, also in Seattle.
