CoHabit

Projection-mapped paper maché sculptures, resembling barnacles, adorned a building façade. Microphone inputs from ambient noise dictated the projection intensity, enhancing the synthetic life form theme.

Details

CoHabit consisted of a variety of translucent objects, strategically placed to appear as though they were growing organically on the building facade. These objects were projection mapped to enhance the illusion of a synthetic life form colonizing the environment. The projections responded dynamically to sound, with the energy and color intensifying in response to fluctuations in volume, captured by a dangling microphone.

Inspired by the theme of transformation at the Borealis Festival of Light,  CoHabit aimed to evoke the concept of evolution and adaptation. Drawing inspiration from natural colonizing organisms like barnacles and lichens, the installation symbolized the symbiotic relationship between organic and synthetic elements in urban landscapes. My original idea was to place more objects each night so that the colony would grow a bit over the course of the festival. Because the site I ended up with was high up and had limited access, this proved logistically too challenging.
