Scott K James

Visual/Audio performance

I first got into live visual work around 2001 while I was designing and building multimedia at a firm called Spinwire. We met Rod Hatfield and Pedro Alexander from Spaceboat.tv and soon I was attending and participating -- in their shows. Eventually I joined the board of Spaceboat, and did many more shows. I met and started working with Sean Frego at Spaceboat. Rod, Sean and I wanted to focus more on professional event services, and so we formed The Now Device (TND).

TND has been my main focus professionally for several years, and my "art work" , such as it is, has been organically integrated with the development of and work for that company. Meanwhile, I've been doing shows and nights around town, producing lots of content, refining my technology and techniques. This is a random sampling of some of the work I've done, with Spaceboat, with TND and solo.

Decibel Festival | 2004 – 2009, inclusive | Seattle.

Installation, visual hosting and live mixing with many, many cool artists. In 2006 The Now Device designed and installed 5 screens for an immersive experience at the Decibel mainstage at Neumo’s. In recent years, I’ve been going in and mixing solo.

Obelus | 08.21.08 | Nectar | Seattle.

I actually did a couple of shows w/ Obelus in Seattle. This one featrued Andy Seaver (ndCv) on Keyboards, and was in the heart of Fremont.

Design Studio @ The Westcott House | July 2008 | The Westcott House | Springfield, OH.

The Westcott House and The Now Device produced a multi-media summer studio. I spent much of June and all of July working on this envelope-pushing project. The idea was to bring the kind of technology and art that The Now Device specializes in, put it together with young students and get them to create something new. Throw in immersion in a restored Frank Lloyd Wright house and you have something pretty cool. Check out the studio site to see lots of documentation, student work, etc.

Griffin House | 06.18.08 | Springfield Summer Arts Festival | Springfield, OH.

The Now Device provided live-ness for a hand full of shows at Springfield’s Summer Arts Festival while we were out there. Like this night with Griffin House:

w/ Elan Vytal in NY | 04.20.08 | 507 Bar Lounge | Williamsburg.

Played with Elan Vytal (a.k.a. DJ Scientific) and Matt Szemela (a.k.a. Matt Z, an amazing violinist) in a small club in Williamsburg. This was very intimate, but a great set up, with Matt playing in front of and reacting to the screen with my live mix on it. Meanwhile, his signal, after passing through a rack of foot pedals, was going out to Elan Vytal’s set up, where he could sample and further process it, mix it in with vinyl, or just let it be. Truly a rich, layered approach to audio/visual performance. One of the coolest pieces I’ve done in a long time – seems like there is tons of potential here.

Seattle Green Festival Vendor Party | 04.11.08 | Seattle Aquarium | Seattle.

Performed as iller aint, with Andy Seaver. I was invited to provide some live visuals and music during this private party in the aquarium. I ended up inviting Andy to join me, and we performed an iller aint set in the new large main hall at the aquarium.

Abberation V | 03.22.08 | State Theater | Springfield, OH.

The fifth of these multi-media, multi-faceted art opening, performance events that the Abberation Concensus crew (mainly DJ Kevin Callison and artist Peter Hrinko) threw out there. I managed projections on and around the big proscenium in a not-yet-restored (that’s putting it lightly) amazing antique theater. There was live painting, all sorts of improv and otherwise music and theater from the stage. I mixed mainly with music when I could.

Club Cruz Control | 02.15.08 | The Moore Theater | Seattle.

this was a gig for The Now Device, again collaborating with Seattle Theater Group on one of their in-house productions. I provided some background, scene setting visuals for a series of pieces choreographed by Daniel Cruz. We pre-arranged the content, chose a few things that seemed to help the atmosphere of the various numbers, then I mixed it live from way up in the balcony.

Aberation2 – A Multi media Art Exhibition | 5.04.07 | Clark County Heritage Center | Springfield, OH

Rod Hatfield and I installed screens and projection and performed at this second in the series. Mixed some of my content, live shoots of artists painting and live cameras on dancers. This was a benefit for a program called Eyes Wide Open Worldwide.

VJ Night | 4.19.07 | 911 Media Arts Center | Seattle

I played both with ndCv and with Hyacinth, the in-house DJ for VJ night. This is a monthly event curated by VJ scobot featuring local visualists performing, being interviewed, explaining their techniques and fielding questions about technique and technology.

Share, NYC | 4.08.07 | Share | New York, NY.

I was the featured performer at the weekly share open jam. I reprised “advance to retreat”, originally performed with ndCv at the Northwest Film Forum in Seattle. ndCv was represented by a miniDV tape and the audio feed from my camcorder.

Virgin Festival | 04.04-05.07 | Pimlico Race Track | Baltimore, MD.

Was hired by HPX to mix video on a big LED screen backing the stage at the “dance tent” at this annual summer music fest. I can’t even remember everyone who was on that stage. I remember the freaked-out x-triping chick in a bikini who climbed up on the rail over my mixing rig, spoke briefly of being able to fly, then jumped down, onto a fellow crew-member’s back.

ByDesign series Opening Night Event | 03.08.07 | Northwest Film Forum | Seattle.

I was invited to play a set, opening for Randy Jones. Convinced ndCv to come play. We performed a 20 minute A/V piece I like to call ‘advance to retreat’, in the large cinema.

More Music@the Moore: Mashup | 3.02.07 | Moore Theatre | Seattle.

The Now Device was part of a collaboration with Seattle Theater Group. We did stage and production design, ran three live cameras, 5 projection surfaces and a fluid live mix to enhance and energize an evening of music by talented young musicians. Collaborated with DBR.

Various, Scientific American and ndCv | 02.17.07 | Chop suey | Seattle.

Went to mix with ndCv and Scientific and ended up also playing with Various because their video hookup wasn’t working. One of those unexpectedly doing tech and performing all night situations. Fun, though.

School House Rawk! A New Year’s Celebration | 12.31.06 – 01.01.07 | Youngstown Cultural Arts Center | Seattle.

Designed, installed and performed live in the Decibel Room w/Thomas Fehlmann, Jerry Abstract, Let’s Go Outside, Kristina Childs, and Nora Posch.

Akufen Halloween Presented by Plasmodium Events | 10.08.06 | Neumo’s | Seattle.

Musical sets by Aukufen, Lusine and Kristina Childs.
w/ visual artists Sean Frego and Cedar Apffel. We set up a three-screen stage design and mixed all night.

Local Sightings Festival | Northwest Film Forum | Seattle.

Set up an AV environment for the lounge. Music by ndCv and Greg Skidmore.

Club/ Repeating Nights | Seattle

Adrian Belew | 07.07.06 | Springfield Summer Arts Festival | Springfield, OH.

A gig by The Now Device. Rod Hatfield and I did stage design, ran live cameras and integrated custom live visual mixing behind Belew and his band an incredible outdoor show.
